2013 World Games Alternate and U.S. National Team Veteran Replaces Injured Kurt Gibson
Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 27, 2017)—USA Ultimate announced today the addition of Nicky Spiva (Washington, D.C.), to the 20-person World Games team roster.
Spiva replaces Kurt Gibson (Chicago, Ill.).
Gibson was named to the initial roster following a national tryout earlier this month, but the recent assessment of a lingering injury sustained prior to the tryout indicates that Gibson is unable to practice with the team until late June.
The timetable means Gibson would miss all practices and competitions prior to final cuts being made, and following consultation with World Games team coaches Alexander Ghesquiere and Matty Tsang, it was determined that the best course of action was to replace Gibson prior to the team’s first practice in Colorado Springs April 14-16.
“It is obviously a shame to lose a player of Kurt’s talent and experience,” explained Ghesquiere, “but luckily, we have such great depth in the U.S. that we can bring on someone as good as Nicky Spiva. We are all excited to welcome him to the World Games team.”
A U.S. National Team veteran, Spiva played in in the mixed division at both the 2016 WFDF World Ultimate & Guts Championships and 2015 World Championships of Beach Ultimate (WCBU). He was also named to the U.S. National Team roster for the 2017 WCBU this summer and was an alternate on the 2013 World Games Team.
