As a college freshman at the University of California-Santa Cruz in 1990, I was throwing with my roommate in the quad and came up with this new throw call the forehand. Imagine my surprise when we signed up for intramural ultimate and found out the throw had already been invented.
Now I live in Oakland with my wife Arlie; daughter, Amari; and cat, Pot Pie. I teach middle school and high school and am a founder of a non-profit called Growing Leaders, an organization focused on college and career readiness for underserved youth.
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking large amounts of food for large groups of people and watching the Golden State Warriors.
Fun Facts about Matty:
- Before I was a teacher, I was a commercial photographer. My main gigs were two hip hop magazines and a modeling agency.
- My favorite taco is a tripas taco.
- I’m not on any social media. Except GroupMe, which I don’t think even counts.
