June 21, 2017 – Four days into competition at the 2017 World Championships of Beach Ultimate, three of the United States’ seven teams are now headed into bracket play. The men’s and men’s masters teams will each start their days tomorrow in the quarterfinals, while the mixed team will kick off the day in the pre-quarterfinal round.
The U.S. women’s team has one game remaining in their power pool, a rematch of the 2015 WCBU final against Russia, before moving on to the pre-quarters. Both the mixed masters and women’s masters teams have two games remaining in pool play before their divisions advance straight to the semifinals tomorrow afternoon, local time. The grand masters team also has two pool play games remaining before the semifinals and finals on Friday.
The mixed team lost another close game today, this time against the Philippines. After leading 8-2, the U.S. gave up seven straight points to fall 8-9 in the crossover round. But because they finished second in their pool, after a three-way tiebreaker with Italy and Sweden, the U.S. still advanced to the pre-quarterfinals. They’ll face Ireland tomorrow morning.
The men’s team also played a nail-biter today in their final pool play game against Spain. After largely trading points early, Spain got three straight breaks to take them into halftime up 7-5. The U.S. fought back in the second half, evening the score at 8-8 before Cassidy Rasmussen took over. He leads the team in assists and threw three against Spain – the final three of the game for the U.S. Jared Inselmann bookended the game with goals, scoring the first and last, and helping keep the men’s team undefeated. They’ll meet Australia in the quarterfinals tomorrow afternoon.
